Salvage into long shelf-life products, compost, grow i.e. self-reliance
“Ranked with countries, food waste would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases globally just behind the United States and China.”
Reduce food waste is ranked solution #3 to reverse climate change by the Drawdown project.
An american produces on average 1 pound of food waste a day corresponding to about 1/3 of the food that was bought. The art of kitchen efficiency has been lost and need to be restored to honor the amount of resources that is required to produce goods.
Before we all master the art of kitchen efficiency, we need systems to recover and reduce food waste to minimum.
Positive impact 808 developed a 3-steps process (Collection, Harvest, Compost) to optimize food use producing
- food (powder, flour, dried fruits and vegetables), vinegar, cider?
- cleaning and beauty supplies (vinegar, avocado seed powder)
- everything you need to grow food (seeds, plants, and worm casting)
The process capacity adapted in size to a city backyard (300 sqmeter) is estimated at ~10 lbs of food waste a day or 1/3 cubic yard. The composting system made of repurposed materials combines tumbler composting bins and a worm farm. It recycles 10 pounds of food scraps mixed with cardboard boxes into 2.5 pounds of worm casting in less than 6 months.
Presently collecting ~10-15 lbs a day of food waste from a deli/grocery store as well as from a small group of individuals living in apartments looking for composting services in Honolulu town area. This system could be adapted to different locations such on hotel or building to provide waste recovery and food production optimizing the use of their roof . Combined with a water catchment system to be designed next.
FYI, North Shore Oahu has composting services available, check out here. Northshore Compost Community uses bokashi which has very rapid food conversion efficiency (4 months!!)
